What does the law state?

The Swedish Work Environment Authority’s regulations clearly state that employers are responsible for protecting their employees from fall-related injuries. Work at height must be planned, organized, and carried out in a way that prevents fall accidents. This plan must be communicated to everyone who may be involved in the work at height. As an employer, you are also responsible for ensuring that staff have knowledge of the equipment that will be used. If there is a risk of falling over an edge while using personal fall‑protection equipment, a rescue plan must be in place, and it must be known to those performing the work. Working alone is not permitted.

As an employee or contracted worker, you are responsible for using the correct type of equipment, using it properly, and following the plan and instructions provided by the employer or contracting company.

The first choice should always be collective fall protection such as a lift, scaffolding, guardrails, or nets. If this cannot be arranged, personal fall‑protection equipment must be used. Keep in mind that even when working in a lift or basket, personal responsibility is usually required.
